2 What is Persuasive Writing? Writing used to: change the reader’s point of view request an action by the reader ask the reader to accept the writer’s explanation, conclusion, or evaluation of a concept, issue, or problem

3 What elements are used in Persuasive Writing? Addresses one side of a claim. Uses techniques such as: Bandwagon (Everybody does it, and so should you.) Famous people (You can be like this famous person.) Emotionally loaded words (Help the starving children.) Testimonial (It works for me, so it will work for you.) Transfer (Bruno Mars likes ____, so I like ___.)

4 What is Argumentative Writing? Writing that is: logical shows the writer’s belief, or conclusion is valid a claim that is well proven by evidence offers counterclaims

5 What elements are used in Argumentative Writing? Addresses both sides of a claim. Uses evidence to prove a claim. Uses counterclaims to disprove the other side’s claim.

6 What is a claim? In an argument, the writer’s position on an issue or problem. When used in this sense, there may be more than one claim within a work.

7 What is a counterclaim? A claim made to disprove the other side’s point of view

8 What techniques are used in Argumentative Writing? Uses four writing techniques Logical Appeal (logos) Ethical Appeal (ethos) Emotional Appeal (pathos) Cultural/Social Appeal (mythos)

9 What is logical appeal (logos)? The use of reasonable, valid, strong, clear claims and cited evidence to convince the reader.

10 What is ethical appeal (ethos)? The writer uses evidence that is fair, open- minded and honest to appear knowledgeable.

11 What is emotional appeal (pathos)? When the writer uses emotions to connect with the reader.

12 What is social/cultural appeal (mythos)? The writer makes clear references that everyone is familiar with to evoke the feelings of kinship and shared values.
