Chapters 6-8

Viruses: -Don’t have all of the characteristics of living things, so not considered living -Classified according to the host they infect -Simply a piece of DNA or RNA surrounded by an “overcoat” called a capsid -Three types of viruses: a) bacterial, b) plant, c) animal
3
1) Travel on dust particles or tiny water droplets in the air (ex: common cold virus, measles) 2) Contaminated food or drinking water (ex: hepatitis virus) 3) Animal or insect bites (ex: rabies) 4) Insects depositing virus onto food
4
Virus enters the host cell and takes over the cell’s DNA or RNA and causes the cell to make more viruses. This process is called viral replication. At some point, the viruses break open the host cell and invade more cells. How a virus invades your body How a virus invades your body Bacteriophage replication Bacteriophage replication
5
All members of kingdom Monera are bacteria that: A) are single celled (unicellular) B) lack (do not have) a nuclear membrane C) lack some organelles found in most cells Bacteria can reproduce very quickly and produce large colonies of billions which can be seen with the naked eye.
6
You will need to read/skim through pages 92 -102 to find the answers, or some will be in the notes I have just given you. Page 95: #’s 1, 2, 3, and 4 Page 100: #’s 6 and 7 Page 102: #’s 11 and 12
7
Members of kingdom Protista: A) Have a nuclear membrane B) Have organelles C) Live in wet/moist environments Protista has three major groups: A) Protozoans (simple animals) B) Algae C) Slime molds
8
A) Pseudopods (“False feet”) B) Cilia (Tiny hairs) C) Flagella (Whip-like structure)
9
All have chlorophyll (green pigment) for photosynthesis. Many have other pigments as well, so they come in a variety of colors. (Red, brown etc) One celled algae are also known as plankton.
10
A) Live on decaying material (such as rotting logs) B) Have two life stages: reproductive and feeding
11
A) Reproduce by spores B) Have cell walls made of chitin (same substance that makes the shells of crabs, exoskeleton of insects) C) Do not have chlorophyll D) Digest their food before it is ingested =
12
Fungi are “saprophytes”. This means that they feed on dead organisms. They are also decomposers because they break down substances in the environment. =
