1 January 30, 2014 You Need: – 2 big papers – Stick of “charcoal” – Paper Towel Activity: – Elephant studies (sketching and drawings)

2 Some things to know about elephants 2 species: Asian (endangered)& African – Asian elephants: smaller ears/convex back – African elephants: larger ears/concave back Represents strength, wisdom, intelligence & responsibility in some cultures Eat 300-400lbs of food a day! – All grasses, vegetables & fruit when available One of the most intelligent land mammals in the world – Display signs of joy & grief, play & depression just like humans Form deep bonds & memories with herd Biggest threats: – Humans-poaching, environment destruction/climate change

3 Let’s study their forms to be able to better SCULPT them from clay later Blind contour: – Drawing without looking at your paper (review) – Spend 2-3 minutes drawing the outside edges. Get all the texture and bumps as you can. – DON’T LOOK AT YOUR DRAWING! Feel the photograph with your eyes and try to get your hand to move along with it.

7 Elephant Heads Let’s focus on the faces and heads of the elephant. You can look at your paper and draw normally now. Get in the edges first and if you have time, add some shadows and textures. Notice where the eyes are! They are quite low in the head.

10 Bodies Continue to drawing normally. Take your time Ask yourself and notice: – How long are the legs in relationship to the body? – How big is the head in relationship to the body? – How long is the trunk in relationship to the head?
