2 Background Smokefree North West and Barnardo’s are working together to deliver a Community Activation Project across the North West This partnership is the next stage of delivering the Take 7 Steps Out Campaign developed by SFNW which will incorporate Chemical Soup an intervention created by Barnardo’s and Manchester Primary Care Trust

3 Assumptions Most people know that tobacco smoke is ‘bad’ for their health – but underestimate it’s impact especially on children Most people try to protect their children from tobacco smoke – but they don’t always get it right Most people want to do their best to protect children from risk But... Smoking is an addiction and many parents don’t feel ready or able to quit and need a advice to manage their behaviour effectively

4 Aim Community Activation Project Engage the NW community in protecting children & young people from exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke

5 Objectives Community Activation Project Stage 1 Train a cohort of trainer who will: (Stage 1 trainers are recruited by Barnardos) Train professionals & community members to pass on the key messages and raise awareness ‘get the community talking’

6 Objectives Community Activation Project Stage 2 Talk amongst the community and the cascade of training aims to: Increase awareness of importance of protecting children & young people from tobacco smoke A change in attitudes to smoking in presence of children & young people – ‘denormalising’ Increase number of smokefree homes & vehicles A reduction in the frequency of smoking in presence of children to reduce negative effect smoking role models

7 Call to Action Parents & Carers Take a pack Talk to everyone about protecting children from secondhand smoke Make your home and car smokefree – Ask any smokers who visits your house to take smoking right outside Show the DVD provided in the pack to help other people understand the ‘dangers’ of secondhand smoke Use the quiz to get people thinking and talking 7 © Smokefree North West, 2011

8 Call to Action Health & Childcare Professionals Take a pack Talk to every parent, you come into contact with, about protecting children from secondhand smoke Use the short film, provided on the DVD, and a Chemical Soup kit (if you have access to one) to hold short sessions for parents and carers Cascade this training session to other health and childcare professionals, parents and carers – everything you need to do this is provided in the pack 8 © Smokefree North West, 2011

9 Training Cascade The train the trainer sessions provide the skills knowledge and resources to enable the Barnardos trainers to cascade the training Five training sessions will be provided in each PCT locality during the autumn Sessions will be delivered in Children’s Centres, who will invite: – Parents – Community members – Volunteers – Health and childcare professionals – Each session will also provide three places for PCT staff Each of the Children’s Centres will be supplied with a Chemical Soup Kit which will be available for local use

10 Training Cascade Each person who attends the training will be provided with a pack which contain: – Photocopy-able fact sheets and resources – A DVD A trainers presentation Two short films – A 4-minute brief intervention – 20 minute training presentation 20 minute training presentation

11 Local PR Support A press release will be tailored to each PCT area based on the first session that takes place SFNW will attend session with photographer and will get quotes from local parent/attendee SFNW will work with PCT Comms Lead to generate local coverage

12 What’s happened so far So far press releases have been sent to Oldham, Salford, Cumbria & Wigan
