2 2 CHAPTER OBJECTIVES  Begin a new file or folder search, save a search, and find a file using a saved search  Find a file by specifying the starting point, date, or file type, or knowing a word or series of words in the file  Search for and display the contents of a picture file

5 5 ADVANCED FILE SEARCHING  Allows you to search for files and folders, digital media files, people, computers on a network, and information on the internet.  Search Companion File search – include digital media files (pictures music, and video files), document files (word processing, spreadsheet, database, and so on), and all files and folders (digital media files, system files, folder files, and so on). Network search – allows you to search for computers and people on a network. Internet search – Allows you to search Web pages on the Internet for information.

6 6 BEGINNING A FILE SEARCH  Click the Start button and then click Search on the Start menu

7 7 PERFORMING A SEARCH FOR ALL FILES AND FOLDERS  Case-sensitive search – is a search in which the capitalization of a file or folder name entered in the Search Companion balloon must match exactly the capitalization of the file or folder name on the local hard drive.  Click All files and folders in the Search Companion balloon

8 8 SPECIFYING THE STARTING POINT OF A SEARCH  Click the Look in box arrow and then point to Browse in the Look in list

9 9 SEARCHING FOR A FILE USING A DATE  Point to the When was it modified? double down arrow button in the Search Companion balloon

10 10 RESETTING THE SEARCH CRITERIA TO SEARCH USING A FILE TYPE  Point to the Back button in the balloon

11 11 SEARCHING FOR A FILE USING FILE TYPE  Point to the More advanced double down arrow button in the Search Companion balloon

12 12 SEARCHING FOR A FILE USING A WORD OR PHRASE IN THE FILE  Click the A word or phrase in the file text box, type you word or phrase in the text box, and then point to the Search button

13 13 SENDING A FILE TO THE MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER  Right-click the file name, point to Send To on the shortcut menu, and then point to location of choice on the Send To menu

14 14 SAVING A SEARCH  Click File on the menu bar and then point to Save Search

15 15 USING A SAVED SEARCH TO SEARCH FOR FILES  Click the Start button and then click the saved location on the Start menu. Double-click the Files containing text support icon in the Saved Search group. When the Search Results window displays, maximize the window and then click the Search button

16 16 DELETING MULTIPLE FILES  Select the saved file and Files containing text support files in the My Documents window  Right-click either icon  Click Delete on the shortcut menu  Click the Yes button in the Confirm Multiple File Delete dialog box  Click the Close button in the My Documents window

17 17 SEARCHING FOR PICTURE FILES  Metadata – is identifying information about a file that is stored within a file.  Picture and photo files metadata might include: width and height of image resolution color depth camera model flash mode f-number exposure time  Click the Start button, click Search, and then maximize the Search Results window. Point to Pictures, music, or video in the Search Companion balloon

18 18 DISPLAYING THE CONTENTS OF A PICTURE FILE  Launch the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Double-click the picture  Windows Picture and Fax Viewer view pictures view other pictures in the same folder enlarge and reduce pictures rotate and print pictures copy and delete pictures display a slide show of pictures

19 19 RESETTING THE SEARCH CRITERIA TO SEARCH FOR MUSIC FILES  Click Pictures and Photos to remove the check mark

20 20 SEARCHING FOR MUSIC FILES  Click Music in the Search Companion balloon. then click the Search button

21 21 PLAYING A MUSIC FILE  Launch the Windows Media Player Double-click the music icon in the right pane of the Search Results window

23 23 SEARCHING FOR VIDEO FILES  Videos search for free videos on the Internet purchase a video over the internet copy a video from a video camera search for videos on your local hard drive  Click Video in the Search Companion balloon. then click the Search button

24 24 PLAYING A VIDEO FILE  Launch the Windows Media Player Double-click the video a video file in the right pane of the Search Results window

25 25 RESETTING THE SEARCH CRITERIA TO SEARCH FOR DOCUMENTS  Click the Back button in the Search Companion balloon  Remove any check marks  Click the Back button to display the Documents (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) link

26 26 SEARCHING FOR DOCUMENT FILES  Order of Search First search is in My Documents, (My Music, My Pictures, My Video) Second search is all other files and folders on the local hard drive. (does not include hidden or system files)  Final search is Metadata and file names  Point to Documents (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) in the Search Companion balloon

27 27 RESETTING THE SEARCH CRITERIA TO SEARCH FOR FILES ON THE INTERNET  Click the Back button in the Search Companion balloon two times

28 28 SEARCHING THE INTERNET USING SEARCH COMPANION  A search engine retrieves and displays a list of links to Web pages based upon the keywords in the text box  Default search engine is MSN Search (unless changed)  Click Search the Internet in the Search Companion balloon. Type you search criteria. Click the Search button

29 29 SEARCHING THE INTERNET USING THE CLASSIC INTERNET SEARCH  The Classic Internet search allows you to search for Web pages, mailing or e-mail addresses, business information, maps, encyclopedia articles, and pictures  Search preferences includes using or not using an animated screen character Using or not using the Indexing Service for faster local searches Standard or Advanced method Search Companion or Classic Internet search Show or not show balloon tips Turn on or off the AutoComplete feature

30 30 CHANGING A SEARCH PREFERENCE  The default Internet search behavior for searching the Internet is the Search Companion  Click the Change preferences in the Search Companion balloon  A title and seven preferences display. Choose your preference.

31 31 BEGINNING A CLASSIC INTERNET SEARCH  Click the Change Internet Search behavior  Click the Classic Internet search  Click the Start button, click Search on the Start menu, and maximize the Search Results window. Point to Search the Internet

32 32 SEARCHING FOR A WEB PAGE USING A KEYWORD  A search service allows you to enter keywords (a word or a phrase) about a topic that you are interested, searches for the Web pages that contain the keywords, and then displays a list of links that you can click on the display the associates Web pages.  MSN Search is one of six search services available to search based on a keyword MSN Search, Overture, AltaVista, Lycos, Excite, Yahoo!, Euro seek  If necessary, click Find a Web page. Type your keyword in the Find a Web page containing text box and then click the Search button

33 33 BEGINNING A NEW SEARCH  Toolbar contains three buttons New (start a new search) Next (perform the previously performed search using another search service Customize (select the search service you wish to use)  Click the New button in the Search pane to begin a new search

34 34 SEARCHING THE INTERNET FOR A MAILING ADDRESS  There are three links at the bottom of the Search pane Files and Folders Computers People  InfoSpace is the search service available to search for mailing and e-mail addresses.  Click Find a person’s address, type the First Name in the text box, type the Last Name in the text box, and then click the Search button

35 35 SEARCHING FOR A MAP  There are two search services available to search for maps. Expedia.com MapQuest  Click the New button. Click Find a map. Click the Search For box arrow and then click Address, Place or Landmark. Click the text box and then type in your address, place or landmark. Click the Search button

36 36 RESETTING THE INTERNET SEARCH BEHAVIOR  Always remember to reset your search behavior Click the Start button and then click Search on the Start menu Click Change Preferences in the Search Companion balloon Click Change Internet search behavior Click With Search Companion Click the OK button in the Search Companion balloon Click the Close button in the Search Results window

37 37 VIEWING THE CONTENTS OF THE RECYCLE BIN  Recycle Bin is set for 10% of the total size of the hard drive (this can be changed)  Recycle Bin empty restore a file permanently delete a file  Double-click the Recycle Bin icon.

38 38 RESTORING A DELETED FILE, FOLDER, OR SHORTCUT  Click the file that you want to restore to select the icon and then click the Restore this item in the Recycle Bin Tasks area.

39 39 VIEWING A RESTORED FILE  You need to go the original location that the file was saved for example: My Documents

40 40 EMPTYING THE RECYCLE BIN  When you no longer need the files or the Recycle Bin is full you should empty its contents.  There are several ways to empty the Recycle Bin Click the Empty the Recycle Bin task in the Recycle Bin Tasks area. Click the Yes button to Confirm the delete Right click the Recycle Bin icon and click Empty the Recycle Bin

41 41 VIEWING RECYCLE BIN PROPERTIES  Properties include: delete a file without first sending it to the Recycle Bin display the confirmation dialog box change the amount of disk space  Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and then click Properties on the shortcut menu

42 42 REMOVING THE SAVED SEARCH FILE  Click the Start button and then click where you saved the document (My Documents)  Right-click the Files containing text support icon, click Delete on the shortcut menu, and then click the Yes button in the Confirm File Delete dialog box
