Warm-Up 1/28/15 1)Place homework in basket. 2)Basil babies. 3)Meet in your groups of three or four and finish writing out possible questions for macronutrients. 4)You have 15 minutes.

Objective Approximate energy input. Agenda Macronutrients Energy Activity

Classwork 1) Groups of three or four 2) Make a list of what you believe is important to know about each type of macronutrient. 3) Make up at least ten possible quiz questions pertaining to each type of macronutrient.

Research Diet Debate: Building on homework from last week… 1)Look up some diets that are currently getting a lot of press.

Research 2) When did this diet start becoming popular? 3) About how many people follow this diet in the U.S.? 4) What are the benefits of this diet? 5) What are the disadvantages? 6) How does this diet take into account macronutrients?

Energy What do calories mean???

Energy 1 food calorie = 4184 joules of energy Let’s calculate approximately how many Calories we burn from taking the stairs to get to class. Calorie Activity

Energy (Calorie) Activity 1)Calculate your weight in kilograms (1 kilogram = ~2 pounds) 2) Multiply your weight in kg by 10. This is the approximate amount of force you exert on the ground in Newtons. 3) Measure the height of one step in centimeters and count how many steps there are in one flight of stairs. Multiply the two numbers. 4) Divide this answer by 100 to get the height of a flight of stairs in meters.

Energy (Calorie) Activity 5) Multiply your answers from #2 and #4 together to calculate the amount of energy, in joules, that you need to use to climb a flight of stairs. 6) Using #5, approximately how many Calories would this burn? (1 Calorie = 4184 joules)

Step Up 7) You will be timing each other for the time it takes to climb one flight of stairs. 8) Make sure you write down the time. 9) Go!

Post-Steps 10) Divide your answer from #5 by the time it took to climb the stairs. 11) What units is your answer in?

Post-Steps 12) Based on your answer from #5 and 6, how much time (in seconds and minutes) would it take for you personally to burn the Calories from an entire caramel apple? 13) How many times would you have to climb the stairs to do that?

Steps 1-13 complete of Energy (Calorie) Activity. Checked off by Ms. Au- Yeung

Homework Bring in an empty disposable water bottle. Make sure your name is written on it. Due 2/2/15
