2 Slave Rebellions Slave rebellions scared the pants off of Southerners –Famous Virginian rebellions were led by Nat Turner and Gabriel Prosser So the Southerners cracked down with harsh fugitive slave laws Those who opposed slavery in the South (yes, there were Southerners who disliked slavery), we’re over-come by those supporting it –They were intimidated into silence

3 William Lloyd Garrison– The Liberator William Lloyd Garrison was an abolitionist. What do you think that means? He published The Liberator newspaper which called for an immediate end to slavery, saying the institution of slavery violated basic Christian principles. Do you agree with him? Men like Garrison worried people in the South. Why might he have done so?

4 Fugitive Slave Act What is taking place in this photo? Fugitive slave laws required Northerners to capture and return runaway slaves. Many Northerners found this to be morally wrong and would not follow the laws.

5 Uncle Tom’s Cabin Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a highly controversial book published by Harriet Beecher Stowe (pictured) in 1852 In depicted African-American slave life Northerners were appalled at the horrors of slave life– they felt the book gave them yet another reason to fight against slavery The South was outraged at the publication of this book Many historians point to the publication of this ONE book as one of the direct causes of the War

6 Dred Scott Dred Scott vs. Stanford = famous Supreme Court Case 1857 Dred Scott was a slave that traveled to a Free State with his master and tried to declare himself free upon entering the Free state Dred Scott was found to be the owner’s property and not a person that could declare his freedom

7 Dred Scott Case Results The Supreme Court decided that slaves were not and could not be U.S. citizens They were not entitled to the rights of a citizen Angered many– especially in the North Further divided the nation
