Introduction to the Microscope Care Parts Focusing
3
Always carry with 2 hands: on arm & base Only use lens paper for cleaning the objectives and the ocular lens Do not force adjustment knobs Always store covered Keep objects clear of desk and cords
4
Eyepiece Body Tube Revolving Nosepiece Arm 3 Objective Lens Stage Stage Clips Coarse Focus Fine Focus Base Diaphragm Light
5
A.Click nosepiece to the lowest magnification (shortest = 4X) B.Place the slide on the stage; center the specimen under the scanning objective C.Use stage clips to secure slide D.Look through the eyepiece while using the coarse adjustment knob to bring the object into focus
6
E. Once in focus under the scanning objective, rotate the nosepiece to the low power obj. = 10X 1.Look into the eyepiece (10X) 2.Use the course or fine adjustment knob to adjust the clarity The letter “e” Cotton fibers
7
F. Rotate the nosepiece to the high power obj.= 40X 1. Use the fine adjustment knob ONLY to bring the object into clearer vision

Calculating Total Magnification Each lens MULTIPLIES the magnification 1. The ocular lens (or eyepiece) magnifies 10X This 10X is ALWAYS part of calculating total magnification. 2.The scanning (shortest) obj. lens magnifies 4X 3.The low power obj. lens magnifies 10X 4.The high power obj. lens magnifies 40X Now calculate the TOTAL MAGNIFICATION a specimen is magnified under each of the 3 objective lenses: check with teacher to finish.
