12 18 October 2003 12 New Encroachment Partnering Tool - 10 USC 2684a Authorizes military departments to sign agreements with state or local governments or private conservation groups to: –limit use or development of property near military bases –preserve habitat to relieve environmental restrictions on military operations May acquire real estate interests for these purposes, and DOD can share the costs Operations & Maintenance funds authorized; no dedicated funding sources Does not authorize land acquisition for active military use

13 18 October 2003 13 Compatible Land Use and Buffers Services and DoD are establishing partnerships to develop buffers or otherwise promote compatible land uses –Private Lands Initiative, Fort Bragg, NC –NW Florida Greenway, Eglin AFB –NGB Camp Blanding, Florida –Camp Ripley, MN –NAS Pensacola, FL President’s 2005 Budget gives $12.5M to further compatible land use strategies –Initiating signature projects for FY05 –Statewide Planning Assessment Pilots in FY04-05
