2 Water Quality Results The County faces the challenge of addressing “Impaired Waters” Over 177 areas have been listed for a variety of pollutants Stormwater Runoff is the major source of pollutants. Tributaries Verified “Impaired” by DEP

4 Four major segments of Tampa Bay and its Watershed

5 Water Quality Results Three of the four major bay segments have met goals for chlorophyll–a and water clarity targets. Old Tampa Bay suffered an extensive algae bloom in the summer of 2009 and exceeded the chlorophyll–a target

6 Petroleum Cleanup Program: Since 1987 the Waste Management Division has administered the Agency’s Petroleum Cleanup Program under contract with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The program is a testament to government streamlining and a prime example of public & private partnership to achieve environmental results. Contaminated Sites since inception = 2413 Remediated/Closed Sites to date = 1225 Remaining Contaminated Sites = 1188 673 Sites currently in progress 515 Sites that have yet to be addressed 114 Sites within Water Resource Protection Zones

12  Ozone is a lung and cardiovascular irritant  Ozone can penetrate deep into the lungs and: Make breathing outdoors more difficult Increase asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis  Severity of effects is based on susceptibility of population Pyramid of Health Effects Ozone exposure and our Health

16 National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) The EPA Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) has set National Ambient Air Quality Standards for six principal pollutants, which are called "criteria" pollutants. They are Ozone, Particulate Matter, Lead, Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, and Nitrogen Dioxide. Each of the criteria pollutants have recently been evaluated to determine if new standards should be set based on the protection of human health. The lead standard is now 1/10 the amount it was a few years ago. Hillsborough County is currently failing to attain the standards for Ozone (county wide) and lead (1.5 km radius around Envirofocus). NAAQS info can be found here: http://www.epa.gov/air/criteria.html http://www.epa.gov/air/criteria.html
