6 Let’s Debate! In class debate addressing the following topic: The impact of technology on interpersonal communication. Topics discussed during the debate will include topics we have discussed in class (e.g. self disclosure, close relationships, culture) One side will argue that technology has a positive impact; one side will argue that technology has a negative impact. Sides will be assigned. Prepare in class today and outside of class; debate on Thursday Count as final application exercise (points prep and participation)

7 ROUND 1 (approx 8 minutes)ROUND 2 (30 minutes) – 5 mins eachROUND 3 (approx 8 minutes) Opening Remarks – Side 1 Opening Remarks – Side 2 Topic 1 (impact on communication skills, e.g. listening, verbal, nonverbal) o Side 2 o Side 1 Response/Questions - Side 2 response Topic 2 (impact on disclosure and relationships) o Side 1 o Side 2 Response/Questions - Side 1 response Closing Remarks – Side 2 Closing Remarks – Side 1 Debate Rules and Order TOPIC: The impact of technology on interpersonal communication Side 1: Positive impact Side 2: Negative Impact Directions: Break large group into two different groups—each team (within the group) will take a specific topic. Also, assign someone to deliver the opening remarks and closing argument. You are not allowed to interrupt anyone while they are speaking. Decide – Who will make opening remarks? Who will make closing remarks? NOTE: You should bring a typed (1 page) bulleted (or numbered) list of your notes that you will use during the debate. Your notes should be supported by the research you conducted. Your argument should not be based solely on opinion. Opening remarks can be written as bulleted list or paragraph. Consider general arguments that support both topics for your side. If you are doing closing remakes you are able to include a paragraph or bulleted lists, but please keep in mind that you will add to your closing remarks based on what happens in the debate. For closing remarks, just consider general arguments that support both topics for your side. THREE ROUNDS
