1 Careers Inspiration South East Midlands LEP Mark Pike and Joanna Barnett SEMLEP Skills Forum – 20 th May 2015

2 Context Careers Inspiration is about people across the region making decisions about their careers based on inspiring careers guidance Ofsted thematic review Statutory Guidance and non-statutory advice National Careers Service remit extended to include supporting inspiration by brokering relationships between schools and employers

3 National digital offer New and improved section on the website for 13 – 16 year olds Flexible contact for 13 – 18 year olds via webchat, telephone – free call back service, text, textphone, moderated chat room and message board Information via social media – Facebook, Twitter and You Tube Skills to Succeed Academy – an online employability learning solution Downloadable e-pack for teachers. Content supporting national recommendations

4 Regional collaboration Working with partners across the region we’ll ensure that schools have access to national and local provider information Supporting a consistent message about economic growth priorities Collaborating on regional development of frameworks and employer engagement activity.

5 Local service Termly newsletter keeping schools up to date with all Inspiration news and activity Access to LMI resources such as the Word on Work blog and a bespoke What Work booklet for each geographical area Working with schools to establish employer connections Employability diagnostic

6 From June, this pilot activity will allow targeted initial engagement with some Schools across the SEMLEP area (in line with contract and LEP requirements). This will include an initial assessment of current provision through the Employability Diagnostic Recommendations for WRL activities that support in achieving 4 inspiration outcomes: 1. Support learners to increase awareness and understanding of the world of work 2. Engagement of specific employers to increase industry awareness 3. Raise aspirations through engagement with inspirational examples from the world of work 4. Equip learners with the ability to identify relevant skills, achievements and experience and link them with employability

7 Delivery of Work Related Activities A range of support will be offered, for example:- Representative Speakers from employers to discuss local employment skills needs (using Labour Market Information) and the world of work from their perspective and the potential career pathways (including traineeships/apprenticeships /college/ university) Workplace or educational visits and taster sessions Help with basic career management skills (CVs, application forms, searching for a job and undertaking interviews.) Sourcing appropriate local speakers into schools (LEP/Chamber of Commerce/FSB/other local Business Networking organisations) to discuss skills shortages/skills needs in the local area and also discussing careers of the future. Disseminating LMI Packages – outlining current and future career opportunities This contract DOES NOT include one to one careers guidance and is to enhance the current schools statutory responsibilities.
