First analyses using EFG data: investigations on childlessness Dr. Marion Burkimsher Affiliated to the University of Lausanne

Validation 1: main factors influencing childlessness Logistic regression: results from Census 2000 and EFG 2013 Women & men born 1946-1955 (ie. aged 45-54 in 2000)

Cohort band Validation 2: childless by cohort band: census 2000 & EFG

Note! If comparing religious attendance in EFG & other surveys… In EFG respondents not asked about attendance at religious services if they said they had “no religion”  Cannot directly compare with other surveys, except by adding in “no religion” respondents into “non-attender” category

Remark! When looking at fertility intentions…they are fluid! From SHP, for childless men & women for whom there were 3+ valid waves answering “How many children do you want?” (N=240) 63% always said >=1 37% sometimes said none, sometimes >=1 NONE always said they wanted no children

Results of logistic regression analysing… …the factors which have an influence on…. Not wanting children Not marrying/partnering Remaining childless  For men and for women See sheet….

Why have I been analysing the EFG data? Book chapter: “Socio-economic differences in childlessness in Switzerland and Austria” Marion Burkimsher & Kryštof Zeman in “Childlessness in Europe: Patterns, Causes and Consequences’ Ed. Michaela Kreyenfeld & Dirk Konietzka Publication: upcoming!!
