3 Fruit and Vegetable Markets Since October 1969 Formerly been located at the Queen Victoria Market site and prior to this at the Eastern Market and at the Western Market. History dates back to just six years after the Port Phillip settlement

4 Appleton and Swanson Docks Large ships were unable to navigate the Yarra River, so cargo destined for Melbourne had to be unloaded at either Hobsons Bay or Port Melbourne. This was an expensive and inefficient process. Therefore the above docks were constructed.

8 Fruit and Vegetable Markets The Melbourne Markets is the central wholesale trading and distribution centre for Victoria’s fresh produce industry. The Melbourne Market Authority is responsible for managing the site and its operations which include the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market and the National Flower Centre plus an extensive range of associated warehousing and distribution facilities.

9 In 2005, the State Government announced the closure of the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market to make way for an extensive redevelopment of the Port of Melbourne and the construction of new freight rail links to the area.
