9 MEXICO TIMELINE 1200 B.C Olmecs settled along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. 500 B.C Mayan civilization began to take shape on the Yucatan Peninsula . A.D Mayan cities left empty or reclaimed by the rainforest. A.D The Aztec civilization developed around the Valley of Mexico. A.D Tenochtitlan had more than 300, people. A.D Hernando Cortes arrived in Mexico.

10 1519-1521. Spanish explores led by Hernando
Spanish explores led by Hernando Cortes conquered the Aztec Empire. Early 1500 Roman Catholic Missionaries taught their religion to million of natives. September 15, 1810 The Mexican people rebelled against Spain. Sept. 16, Mexicans won independence from Spain. Two emperors, several dictators, and many presidents and chief executives governed Mexico.

11 problems under President Benito Juarez.
1836 Texans declared their independence from Mexico. The United States Government voted to annex Texas or add it to the nation. Mexican-American War- Mexico loses and give up Texas to the United States. 1848 The Treaty of Guadalupe was signed. The United States bought present day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico and parts of Wyoming and Colorado. Late 1800-early 1900 Mexico experiences many problems under President Benito Juarez.

12 May 5, 1862 Battle of Puebla (French and Mexicans)
1872 President Benito Juarez dies along with his efforts of reform. 1876 Porfirio Diaz took control of the government and made himself president. 1910 Francisco Madero called for an end to Diaz’s Rule. 1917 Mexican Revolution came to an end and a new constitution was written.

13 1929-2000 One political party, the Institutional
One political party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), controlled Mexico. Vicente Fox Quesada from the National Action Party (PAN) was elected. Dec 1, President Felipe de Jesus CALDERON elected president from the PAN Party. Dec 1, President Enrique Pena Nieto elected president from the PRI Party
