By Tuesday, Sept. 16 th, read “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift in your Lit Books on page 502. Today, please sign your name and my name in your Lit book. Also sign the book check-out sheet. Please take out Loved One materials and “The Ugly Truth about Beauty” Handout

3 September 16, 2008 Good Morning, Happy Scholars! Please prepare to take a real, live AP Multiple Choice quiz based on “A Modest Proposal” When finished with quiz, read some of the satirical essays modeled after Swift’s format. Homework: Please draw a picture of a “hollow man” by tomorrow,according to instructions on the handout.

5 September 18, 2008 More Loved One movie clips today Original satires due Friday, Sept 26 th —get started this weekend! Loved One in-class essay tomorrow. – Take time to plan essay. Underline key command verbs in the prompt. You will write about a passage that you will compare/contrast to Waugh’s novel. Use point by point organization. – What is each author’s main purpose? What rhetorical strategies does each author use? – Use specific evidence to support ideas

6 Happy Friday, September 19th Prepare to write your in-class essay! Black pen is preferable and write on one side of the paper only. Good Luck! Try to work hard on your original satires this weekend. You have received two more satires to read—remember, the best way to learn to write satire is to read good satire!
