EU funded projects in Bucharest and surroundings areas Meeting with the Italian Presidency 24 November 2014

Project acronym: PersoTHER Project name: Implementing tissue molecular assays for cancer in Romania. A high-level research oriented to personalized oncology Programme name: Operational Programme 'Increase of Economic Competitiveness', Priority Axis 2– RD&I, Operation 2.1: R&D partnerships between universities/research institutes, and enterprises for generating results directly applicable in economy – with foreign coordinator Prof. G. Bussolati) Budget (in RON): 6.103.610,00 lei of which non-refundable funds: 5.416.951,00 lei Beneficiary: "Victor Babes" National Institute of Research Development in the Pathology domain and Biomedical Sciences Starting date (month, year): 06/2010 Ending date (month, year): 06/2013 Webpage presenting the project: http://ivb.ro/persother/http://ivb.ro/persother/

Project acronym: PersoTHER Project name: Implementing tissue molecular assays for cancer in Romania. A high-level research oriented to personalized oncology  The research project “Implementing tissue molecular assays for cancer in Romania. A high-level research oriented to personalized oncology – PERSOTHER – POS CCE nr 549/12024/2010” has as main objective the setting up and implementing of a model of effective investigations of tumours by high performance genetic and molecular methodologies types in order to decrease the disparities in the implementation of EU strategy on cancer.

Project acronym: PersoTHER Project name: Implementing tissue molecular assays for cancer in Romania. A high- level research oriented to personalized oncology Projects outcomes: Implementation of molecular biology methods in the Diagnostic Centre of "Victor Babes" National Institute of Research Development in the Pathology Creation of a powerful research team under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Giovanni Bussolati Patent applications resulting from the project: 2 The project generated 4 jobs in the R&D field and 14 scientific publications

Project name: THE EXTREME LIGHT INFRASTRUCTURE - ELI-NP Programme name: Operational Programme 'Increase of Economic Competitiveness' Budget (in RON): 1013 Mil. Lei Total cost (phase 1): € 225 million (ERDF contribution: € 150 million) Beneficiary: The “Horia Hulubei” National Institute of Research and Development for Physics and Nuclear Engineering Webpage presenting the project: http://www.eli-np.ro http://www.nuclear.ro/conference/nuclear%202013/prezentari_sesiune_plenara/ELI- NP_Nuclear.pdf

ELI-NP's objective is to create a European centre for high-level research on ultra-high laser and laser-matter interaction. The ELI-NP research site will attract researchers, students, private and business sectors from across the world to study extreme light applications for the benefit of society. The site should also put Europe on the map of nuclear physics research using high-tech laser technology. ELI-NP is part of a research consortium that brings together 40 partners from13 Member States. ELI-NP is based in Bucharest-Ilfov region, but the project ELI includes two other independent research facilities: one in Hungary and another one in the Czech Republic. By 2018, ELI-NP will employ 262 researchers including 36 support staff. The research site is scheduled to be operational by 2018.

To be built in Bucharest-Magurele, ELI-NP will be one of the three pillars of ELI - THE EXTREME LIGHT INFRASTRUCTURE, along with the facilities dedicated to the study of secondary sources (Dolni Brezany, near Prague) and of attosecond pulses (Szeged). ELI-NP is a very complex facility which will host two machines of extreme performances. ELI-NP will create a new European laboratory to consistently investigate a very broad range of science domains, from new fields of fundamental physics, new nuclear physics and astrophysics topics, to applications in material science, life sciences and nuclear materials management.
