3 2005 UNC TLT Conference Origins of SAKAI The Sakai Project, a landmark venture to create open- source course management tools and related software for the higher education community, is being launched with a $2.4 million grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, it was announced today. University of Michigan News Service (Jan. 22, 2004) Sakai software was developed as a $6.8 million synchronized project of the University of Michigan, Indiana University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press release from MIT (Jan 23, 2004)

4 2005 UNC TLT Conference SAKAI is… a project to develop a “Community Source” learning management system and framework an extensible framework to provide support for a range of educational tools and services a set of tools - written and supported by various groups a product - a bundle of framework and tools, tested and released as a unit freely available to interested institutions

5 2005 UNC TLT Conference SAKAI is not… complete, it’s an ongoing development, currently at release 1.5 cost free; significant investments (partnership, training, hardware, programming, management) required for development and implementation closed; source code, planning, roadmaps available to participants

6 2005 UNC TLT Conference Evolution of SAKAI – the SEPP 65 members have joined the Sakai Educational Partners Program (SEPP) Promoted as a sustainable, fee-based ($5K or 10K$/year) partnership that provides:  implementation consulting  conference access  early access to documents  access to technical staff  tools exchange  developer training
