1 Year 5 Autumn 1 2015 “Force of the Anglo Saxons” Skills Literacy Reading Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes. Read and discuss a wide range of fiction.. Recommend books to their peers giving reasons for choices. Ask questions to improve understanding. Draw inferences and justifying these with evidence from the text. Retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction. Writing Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them. Use a dictionary to check the spelling and meaning of words. Identify the audience for and purpose of writing. Select appropriate grammar and vocab, understanding how these change and enhance meaning. Assess the effectiveness of their own and others writing. Grammar and Punctuation Use commas to clarify meaning and avoid ambiguity. Use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where. Why, whose, that etc. Use and understand grammatical terminology in reading and writing. Science - Forces Explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object. Identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect. RE What is the best way for a Hindu to show their commitment to God? Maths Multiplication and division Identify multiples and factors, find factor pairs of a number and common factors of two numbers. Multiply and divide numbers mentally drawing upon known facts. Solve problems involving multiplication and division using their knowledge of factors and multiples, squares and cubes. Addition and Subtraction Add and Subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers. Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits. Use rounding to check answers to calculations. Solve addition and subtraction multistep problems in contexts, deciding which operations to use. Geometry Know angles are measured in degrees; estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles. Fractions Recognise and convert between mixed and improper fractions and write mathematical statements. Identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually including 10ths and hundredths. Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all of the same number. History -Develop a chronological and secure knowledge of British and world history. -Address and devise historically valid questions. -Note connections and contrasts over time. Geography None this half term PE Copy and repeat simple actions in gymnastics, using coordination and control. Take part in a conditioned game and control the ball in an opposed situation. Computing Search a database to research information, using a range of search techniques. Search for, interpret, check and qu info, identify relevant/irrelevant info, present in suitable format for chosen audience. Share ideas using online methods. Art/DT Produce creative work, exploring their own ideas and recording their experiences. Select from and use a wide range of tools to perform practical tasks. Apply their understanding of how to stiffen and strengthen complex structures. Use mechanical systems in products e.g. pulleys. French Say and write the numbers 1 – 20. Name classroom objects. Understand classroom instructions. Music Appreciate and understand music from different cultures and traditions.

Measure and estimate angles of real objects around the school – using previous knowledge to estimate other angles. Science Compare and discuss how and why objects of different mass fall at different speeds – make predictions and discuss forces behind them. Name different types of forces. RE Learn the basic principles of the Hindu faith. Research how they deomstrate their commitment to God. Create a powerpoint to explan to others about the Hindu faith. Geography None this half term. PE Hockey – Control and pass the ball. Gymnastics – controlled movements using different parts of the body. Art/DT Design Anglo Saxon armour and label reasons for design. Create an Anglo Saxon home/mini village. Create a mode of transport for AS. French Name and write numbers 1 – 20. Label objects around the classroom. Music Listen and evaluate forms of Latin music. Compose a piece of Latin music. History – Anglo Saxons Describe why the AS came to Britain – invaders or settlers? Compare armour and weaponary to Romans. Compare ways of living.
