1. DOMINION STATUS. The British felt that the best deal they could offer Sinn Fein at the Treaty negotiations was DOMINION STATUS for the 26 counties outside Northern Ireland. This would give the 26 counties the same amount of Independence as other dominions in the British Empire. Other dominions included Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

2. DOMINION STATUS Dominion status would give Ireland its own Parliament but with more decision making powers than would be granted under Home Rule. Dominion status would give Ireland almost total control over their own affairs but Ireland would still be part of the empire and the King would still be the head of state. People elected to the Parliament would have to swear an oath of allegiance to the British King/Queen as head of the state.

3. DOMINION STATUS Although Ireland would get its own Parliament with strong powers the British Parliament would keep the right to over rule the decisions of the Irish parliament if they felt they had to.
