GALATIANS 2 Salvation By FAITH ALONE

What is necessary for salvation? Works? Knowledge? Commitment? Confession of sin? Believe

How do works relate to salvation? Necessary as proof? Necessary to maintain salvation? Natural outgrowth of salvation?

I.Jerusalem Council 2:1-10 Acts 15:1 ‑ 21

II.11 ‑ 21 ‑‑ Justification by faith alone Conflict between faith and works Guilt is universal All realize they are guilty and try to rid themselves of that guilt. Cain and Abel Others who have done this

III.Peter's deviation The clash 11 The Cause 12 The Consequences 13 Galatians 2:13 (ESV) And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 1 Timothy 5:20 (ESV) As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.

IV.Paul's doctrine 14 ‑ 21 PROBLEM: For years the church in Antioch had taught salvation by faith alone. Now, almost overnight, it changed to the opposite.

Paul's reaction 14 Galatians 2:14 (ESV) But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?” Peter's offense was public ‑‑ PUBLIC REBUKE Peter after experience of unclean animals and Cornelius— Realized Old Testament ceremonies no longer valid. Legalism was not valid in anyway, shape or form.

Paul's statement 15 ‑ 16 Galatians 2:15–16 (ESV) — 15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. Impossible for man to justify self Impossible for man to purify self

C.Paul's defense 17 ‑ 21 Romans 7:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Or do you not know, brothers— for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Romans 7:4 (ESV) Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.

Legalism cancels the effect of the cross I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 (ESV)

Galatians 2:21 (ESV) I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Are you living by faith or by a set of rules?

Salvation is the result of Christ's substitutionary death Will you receive His gift? Salvation Will you live His gift? Sanctification
