This is a power-point on volcanoes. By Eve-Marie Cook

Contents  What is a volcano?  How do they work?  Where are there volcanoes ?  How many people have died?

 A volcano is a mountain or hill, typically cone shaped, having a crater or vent where lava, rock fragments, hot vapour, and gas are or have been erupted from the earth's crust.

 The Earth's crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. These plates sometimes move. The friction causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the edges of the plates. The theory that explains this process is called plate tectonics.

Where are there volcanoes? The red dots represent volcanoes. As you can see most volcanoes are along the coastline or in the sea.

 About 200,000 have lost their lives by volcanic eruptions over the last 500 years. One devastating eruption was in the Carrabin where about 30,000 people died.
