5 Garuda’s Story When Garuda had just been born from an egg, already fully grown, his mother was imprisoned by her rival, Kadru and was guarded by two serpents. The only way Garuda was able to free his mother was for him to steal the amrita or water of immortality from the gods, and give it to his mother’s captor as ransom. Garuda succeeded in capturing the amrita and rescuing his mother from the serpents, although he made the gods very angry for taking their water of immortality. (Garuda bottom, Vishnu top) (Heyliger)

6 How Garuda Became the Carrier… One day, Garuda took the moon from the sky and carried it away with him. The gods found out about this robbery and attacked Garuda in an attempt to rescue the moon. Because Garuda was so powerful, none of the gods could beat him except for Vishnu. Garuda surrendered to him and Vishnu made him immortal and employed him as his carrier. (Levels)
