3-3 COMBINING LIKE TERMS TO SOLVE EQUATIONS MISS BATTAGLIA – ALGEBRA 1 CP OBJECTIVE: COMBINE LIKE TERMS AND SOLVE EQUATIONS BY COMBINING LIKE TERMS.

WARM UP The geese in Algonquin Park left to migrate south. On the first day, five geese left. On the second day, ten geese left. On the third day, 20 geese left. If this pattern continued, how many geese left the park in a ten-day period?

DEFINITIONS If a term has a variable, the numerical factor is called the coefficient. Terms are like terms if they have exactly the same variable factors.

SIMPLIFY THE EXPRESSION - 2 + 6x + z – 2x + 8 – 4z

SIMPLIFY THE EXPRESSION 9a + 10 – a + 3x - 5

SIMPLIFY THE EXPRESSION -4 + y – 9m – m + 2y

MONEY Each used book at the library sale sold for the same amount. Suppose you bought 6 mysteries and 8 science-fiction books. Then you bought a poster for $2.40. You spent a total of $8.70. Find the cost of each book.

ENTERTAINMENT As a gift for your brother, you order two concert tickets. Two days before the concert a friend asks to join you. When you order the third ticket, there’s a $12 charge for express delivery. The total bill is $78. How much does each person owe?

GEOMETRY A rectangle has perimeter 42 cm. The length is 3 cm greater than the width. Find the width and length of the rectangle.

USE EQUATIONS TO FIND THE VALUE OF EACH VARIABLE. Sum angles of a triangle = 180. Sum angles of quadrilateral = 360.
