Kick Off Meeting March 24-26 th Joensuu, Finland

The MicrE Service MicrE provides a service to develop and promote innovative small scale renewable energy solutions for rural SME’s and local organisations Uses new and existing technologies especially those which generate energy from by-products and waste, and adapt them to suit NPP rural regions

Objectives Increase energy Efficiency and save costs to SMEs Develop new but long term sustainable RES schemes for SMEs Reduce Waste (and its increasing cost to SMEs)

Key Outputs Energy savings per organisation, or SME Waste reduction per organisation or SME And/or improvement in GHG emissions per organisation or SME Potential for application to the business population in rural communities Potential for application to community organisations in rural regions

Further Outputs Testing technologies in partner regions Viable self-sustaining and economic performance improvements Increasing acceptance of the benefits of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Reduced Waste

Strategic Environmental Output Through the recovery of waste as a source of energy at the place of its generation, we will achieve diversion of biodegradable wastes from landfills and reduce emissions of GHGs including carbon dioxide and methane

The MicrE Service Identify, adapt, develop, test, promote and establish means of micro generation of renewable energy in rural areas of the Northern Periphery. Provide small-scale RES solutions to SME’s and local organisations in rural areas Small-scale biomass- and waste-based energy and heat solutions are able to answer the challenges of resource availability, and reduce the impact of human activities on the environment

Technology Advances Micro pyrolysis of wood based products to energy, heat and fuel Micro biomethane production and purification for vehicles Anaerobic digestion with heat and power Small scale gasification with heat and power Others

New Establishments Project Test Facility SME liaison service team On line management & dissemination function

The MicrE Team The University of Oulu provides the practical technology skills, The University of Ulster provides business management skills, The International Resources and Recycling Institute brings the networking skills to assemble the technology partners, and to manage the dissemination and promotion.

Technology Partners Resource Efficiency Knowledge Transfer Network National Industrial Symbiosis Programme Scottish Enterprise Energy Technology Centre C-Tech and Beta Technology
