SMATH #11 What science and math concepts are visible in this photo? Thais read newspapers at their flooded home in Bangkok near the Chao Phraya river on Oct. 16

Glycolysis and Fermentation Go to Section:

1. Organisms obtain energy from food 2. Glucose is main source of food for cells 3. Cells break chemical bonds of glucose; energy released 4. Energy is stored in ATP 5. Making ATP is part of cellular respiration Slide # 2 Go to Section: Cells Need Energy

Cellular Respiration produces carbon dioxide and water, which are used as starting materials (reactants) in photosynthesis C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 ———————  6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + 36 ATP Reactants Products Enzymes Slide # 3 Cellular Respiration Equation

Glycolysis: 1 st Step 1. Glycolysis: occurs in cytoplasm 2. Does not use oxygen 3. Produces a net gain of 2 ATP’s Slide # 11

Glycolysis is the sequence of reactions that breakdowns glucose to obtain energy.  All organism undergo glycolysis.  Glycolysis can be carried out both in the presence or in the absence of oxygen.  Aerobic respiration refers to the entire conversion of glucose to carbon dioxide in the presence of oxygen.  Anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen and it is called fermentation. Glycolysis: 1 st Step

Fermentation 1.Fermentation: a.Respiration that does not use O 2 b.Releases net gain of 2ATP’s 2.Lactic Acid fermentation: a.Glucose is broken down into lactic acid & CO 2 b.Occurs in muscle cells during intense exercise c.Lactic acid causes burning sensation in muscle cells 3.Alcoholic fermentation: (Occurs in Yeast) a.Glucose is broken down into alcohol & CO 2 b.Yeast ferment sugar to make bread dough rise Slide # 9 Go to Section:

Fermentation and cellular respiration are anaerobic and aerobic alternatives, respectively, for producing ATP from sugars. Conclusion

Fermentation Lab Today, you will demonstrate the effects of cell energy processes on gas production using the Fermentation Lab. You will need: Three test tubes Three balloons + 1 piece of string Three yeast samples Cup of warm water 250 ml beaker

Graph your results from the Fermentation Lab (in your notebook) Draw a diagram of the setup and procedures as part of your journal entry for the lab. (in your notebook) Read Chp.10, pgs. 241-249 Section Assessment questions 1-3 on pgs. 243 and 249 (in your notebook) Reflection DUE on Friday! Homework
