1 Unit 3 – The Impact of the Industrial Revolution on New York State This glossary includes vocabulary words, definitions, and pictures. These slides can be viewed as a whole class PowerPoint presentation and can be printed as thumbnail slides for students to have as a study guide. They can also be printed in full size and placed on the wall of the classroom. Created by the fourth grade teachers at Byram Hills

2 canal a man made inland waterway built for transportation or irrigation

3 child labor young children who worked in factories or mines beginning as young as 5 years old

4 ditch a long narrow channel or trench dug into the earth excavating digging out and removing

5 factory a building or set of buildings equipped for manufacturing

6 heritage something acquired from the past

7 homeland native land (where you were born)

8 immigrant a person who comes to a country to live there

10 locomotive a self-propelled engine, running on rails, used to move cars for passengers and freight

11 low bridge a bridge built right above the water
