Sociolinguistics The study of how social conditions influence the use of language How individuals use language is affected by factors such as: – Ethnicity – Religion – Gender – Status – Age – Education

Pragmatics The study of how context impacts the interpretation of language; situations dictate language choice, body language, degree of intimacy, and how meaning is interpreted.

World English A term increasingly used to refer to English, which dominates many aspects of the political and economic progress of the world.

Dialect Variation A general and technical term for a form of language – Regional dialect – Rural dialect – Class dialect – Occupational dialect

Objective 3: Knows the concept of communicative competence Grammar (in its most ample sense, including phonology, orthography, syntax, lexicon, and semantics) + Rules (how to use the above information correctly in socially appropriate circumstances) = Communicative competence
