Welcome to AP Biology Cheryl Lenz Room 1012 Period 1, 4, 5 & 6

Course Goals To focus on depth of understanding and scientific inquiry To learn biological concepts (equivalent to those in a first year college biology course) To prepare for AP Biology Exam in May

4 Big Ideas BIG IDEA 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. BIG IDEA 2: Biological systems utilize energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis. BIG IDEA 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes. BIG IDEA 4: Biological systems interact, and these interactions possess complex properties.

7 Science Practices 1. Use representations and models to communicate scientific phenomena and solve scientific problems 2: Use mathematics appropriately 3: Engage in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide investigations within the context of the AP course.

4: Plan and implement data collection strategies appropriate to a particular scientific question 5: Perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence 6: Work with scientific explanations and theories. 7: Connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts and representations in and across domains

Inquiry Labs ~25% of class time will be spent on labs More student driven labs: Guided inquiry – teacher presented question, students design & select procedures Open inquiry – student generated question, students design & select procedures Traditional labs will also be included
