3 Multiple Meaning Words are words that have several meanings depending upon how they are used in a sentence. We use CONTEXT CLUES to help us figure out which meaning is correct.

4 Steps to identify multiple meaning words  Read the underlined word.  Read the sentence.  Look at clues in the sentence to figure out the meaning of the underlined word.  Re-read the sentence to make sure your meaning makes sense.

5 Let’s Practice Read the underlined word in each sentence. Choose the sentence in which the word has the same meaning as in the original sentence. Are you ready?

6  1. Bella will visit her Grandparents in the Fall. A. Be careful, or you will fall! B. The school year usually starts in the fall.  C. I was worried I might fall off of the old, wooden bridge. Step 1: Read the underlined word. Step 2: Read the sentence. Step 3: Look at clues in the sentence to figure out the meaning of the underlined word. Step 4: Re-read the sentence to make sure your meaning makes sense.

7  2. I found out I sent the letter to the wrong address.  A. Leah gave me her address so I could visit her during Summer vacation.  B. Raul addressed the entire 4 th grade during the Jump Rope for Heart assembly. C. Abraham Lincoln’s famous speech is known as the Gettysburg Address. Step 1: Read the underlined word. Step 2: Read the sentence. Step 3: Look at clues in the sentence to figure out the meaning of the underlined word. Step 4: Re-read the sentence to make sure your meaning makes sense.

8  3. Did I answer all the 4-sight questions, right? A. Hannah said her house will be on the right side of Herrick Street. B. Since the street was closed, I was forced to make a right turn instead of my usual left. C. If you get a plus it means your answer is right.

9  4. Have you ever seen an unidentified object (UFO) in the sky? A. “ I object to your decision”, the Lawyer shouted in the courtroom. B. I found an unusual object in the sand. C. Our teacher asked “if anyone objects to moving our party to Friday?”

10  5. The mighty Wildcats beat the Bears during the cheer competition. A. I enjoy listening to songs with a fast beat. B. The Lakers are definitely going to beat every team during the NBA playoffs.
