1 Transport and handling at CERN for FAIR
Caterina Bertone – EN/HE 12 May 2015

2 Two major implications
Handling inside building 180 Logistics from/to Prevessin reception 12 May 2015

3 Cranes in building 180 60t plus 40t. 60t cranes FAIR side
Can work coupled, hook distance 10,3m Free height under crane profiles 9,61m 12 May 2015

4 Magnets (approved) 57 magnets with a mass fro 35t to 55t, divided in 5 types 12 May 2015

5 Coupling spreader for cranes
In case than the weight to be lifted overpasses 60t (no margin) including: complete magnet + supports + lifting spreader, the cranes needs to be coupled Margin is too few with 55t magnets A 100t coupling spreader is being developed as compact as possible (delivery end 2015) 12 May 2015

6 Integration of handling volumes
Magnets test bench – predefined Path from truck to preparation areas to bench integrated Outcome is the space to be reserved for handling 12 May 2015

7 3D of handling volumes 12 May 2015

8 Space limitation in height
12 May 2015

9 Constraint on tooling Overall height of the lifting spreader and tooling < 1,3m from top of the magnet to lifting point of the crane (including converging slings and accessories) Condition can be relaxed only if: weight of the final magnet + supporting structure + spreader + slings&rigging equipment (overall gross load to be lifted) < 60t In this case, overall height can be 2,51m 12 May 2015

10 For future magnets The weight of the spreader is ~11t, implication being that the maximum gross mass of future magnets (including supports, spreader and any kind of ancillary system to be handled with) that can be handled at CERN is 89t Same volumes shall be respected: if we can have an overview of the proposed magnets, we can feedback on maximum dimensions of the lifting tooling 12 May 2015

11 Logistics from Prevessin
The possibility to unload the external trucks on Prevessin site (FR) and transfer the magnet on CERN means has been analysed Internal transport services at CERN are not equipped for road transfers of more than 50t loads Even for <= 50t, the logistics implications will be very severe (mobile crane operation, special truck….) It is possible for the external transporter to register the material on Prevessin site (so that is officially delivered in Europe) and transport to Meyrin site with an official ‘transfer slip’ that proves that the transfer is made on the account of CERN 12 May 2015

12 Conclusion Transport services is ready now for the installation of the support services in building 180 and will be ready in January 2016 to receive the GSI magnets Road transport from b. 180 to Prevessin site and back should be done by the external transporter via an official transfer slip (to avoid custom problems CH-FR) More precise information about the masses to be lifted (gross) and lifting tooling to be used is needed now to final check the handling volumes and tooling 12 May 2015
