4 Introduction  Why are we here? Educate ourselves in how to use our energy more efficiently. Learn the skills of proper teamwork. Minimize frustration. Get a uniformed idea of what good teamwork is. Gather knowledge.

6 Purpose - discussion  What are the advantages of having a defined purpose from the beginning?  A purpose serves to direct and motivate the team in pursuit of its goals. It also provides the foundation for developing goals and action plans that will assist the team in reaching its desired outcome.

8 Mission statement - UWC UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

9 Mission statement – Red Cross The purpose of the Red Cross is to protect life and health and ensure respect for the human being. It is guided solely by individual need. It makes no distinction as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinion.

10 Chaotic-land  Background: Chaotic-land is a country in crisis. Your new EAC is a group, the purpose of which is to raise money for Chaotic-land. You need to develop a mission statement for the project. Divide yourselves into groups of 5-6 persons. Each group writes down a mission statement for their EAC.

11 Chaotic-land  Task: Formulate 1-2 sentence mission statement by considering the following questions:  Why is the team necessary?  What is the purpose of our group?  How do you work? (information, money, local projects)  Who is benefiting from us doing a good job?

14 Make a plan and define your goals!  Your EAC (Chaotic-land) is going to have a café. Make a plan and define the goals according to the SMART model. What am I doing right now? What am I trying to achieve? How does that relate to the purpose of the group? Is it clear to me what others around me are doing? How much more clarification do I need to be effective?

21 Building-exercise  Build a tower out of Lego Everybody will get a piece of paper with a hidden agenda. You are not allowed to talk to each other during the exercise. You have 8 minutes to finish the assignment.

During the presentation, several students in the back are talking loudly. How do you solve this problem?

31 Dysfunctional team members Condescending Bullying Blocking Avoiding Withdrawing Joking Dominating * Confront the person and talk about the problem.

32 Dysfunctional team members  50% of the group is always late for meetings and do not contribute to the work. It seems they are more interested in writing the EAC on their university application than anything else. What would you do? What should you do, if you are the “problem”?

33 Dysfunctional team members  In the group there are 2-3 persons who never say anything in the meetings and never volunteer for assignments. What would you do? Why does this happen, and how do you avoid it?

34 Dysfunctional team members  You are the leader of a group that is preparing a project. Two members in your team possess contrasting personalities and find it hard to work together without tensions. What would you do as leader? What can you do as other team member?
