2 Fighting in the South The South became the main battle grounds of the war in 1778. Who was the new British commander-in- chief? What did he hope? By December 1778 Clinton had seized Savannah, Charleston, and Camden. The attacks in the back country were very violent. What were some of the things that they did to one another?

3 Fighting in the South Because of the British and Loyalist’s cruelty to the colonists many colonists began to side with the Patriots. Who were the two American generals that helped turn the tide of the war?

4 Fighting in the South Discuss General Nathanael Greene. Discuss General Daniel Morgan. How did the Americans win the Battle of Cowpens and who was responsible for that victory? Greene and Morgan joined their armies when they were fighting Cornwallis at Guilford Courthouse, near Courthouse, North Carolina. This battle was one of the bloodiest of the war.

5 Fighting in the South Who was Swamp Fox? What did he do?

6 Victory at Yorktown Cornwallis abandoned his plan to take the Carolinas. By the spring of 1781 he had moved his troops into north Virginia. There he planned to cut off the American supply routes to the south.

9 By the end of September more that 16,000 American s and French troops had laid siege on Cornwallis’ army of less than 8,000. Day after day the Americans and the French pounded the British with artillery. Finally, on October 19, 1781 the British surrendered their weapons.

10 Victory at Yorktown The Americans and the French lined up in two columns facing each other as the defeated redcoats walked between them. What song did the British play as they left?
