15 Preparedness and Response – Effectiveness CopingAdaptation Stress sell of LivestockPlanned sale of livestock – purchase inputs; savings Purchase of livestock feedLivestock vaccination & treatment Reducing mealsWater harvesting and management Killing calves to maximize production/save mothers Feed production and storage (crop residue/grasses – hay making) Stress migrationReserved grazing areas Feeding livestock with prosopis seeds Livestock diversification

16 Preparedness and Response – Effectiveness More Effective Strategies Reasons Livestock diversification  Responsive to environment  Increases productivity of environment  Ensures access to key resources in time of shortage  Preventative  Reduces impact of hazards Livestock vaccination & treatment Grazing reserves Feed production and storage Water harvesting & management Less Effective Strategies Reasons Killing calves  Short time, uneconomical strategy  Loss of assets  Low incomes - unaffordable  Risk of instability and conflict  Leads to poor health and malnutrition Forced sell of livestock Stress migration Reducing meals

17 Resource Access and Control  Women control dairy products but men control the livestock  Women manage incomes from dairy products  Key resources like pasture and water are controlled by GO  Markets: brokers/traders- not trusted but have greater control; impacted by conflict  Women & primary producers have restricted access to markets  Dairy cooperatives/processing groups do not trust primary milk producers

18 Other Observations on vulnerability  Primary producers- limited access to alternative markets  Primary producers don’t access NGO/GO support in the way cooperatives do  Dairy cooperatives- better networking and marketing skills  Lack of milk collection centers  Market problem for processed milk
