2 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution I) Spanish Texas ◦A) Called Texas, Tejas ◦B) Desirable for its forests, grassy fields, rivers, and natural harbors ◦C) 1821, only 4000 Tejanos, or Spanish who call Texas home, lived there ◦D) Spain tried to get settlers to move but Apache and Comanche made it difficult ◦E) Spain allowed the Austin family to start a settlement

3 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution II) Mexican Independence changes Texas ◦A) Stephen Austin took over the land in Texas given to his father ◦B) 1821, Mexico gets independence from Spain ◦C) Steve Austin attracted 297 families to his colony in Texas ◦Known as the “Old Three Hundred” ◦D) Success attracted more Americans, by 1830 Americans outnumbered Tejanos six to one in Texas

4 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution III) Rising Tensions in Texas ◦A)Americans resented following Mexican laws ◦B) Mexico outlawed slavery in 1829, made Americans mad ◦C) Tejanos felt that Americans thought themselves were superior and deserved special treatment ◦D) Mexico investigated and felt that tensions were too high

6 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution IV) Texans Revolt Against Mexico ◦A) Tensions rose. Austin went to Mexico City to petition the Mexican government for reforms including the right to govern themselves ◦B) Met with Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Mexican President,  1)but learned Austin would rebel if Santa Anna did not agree. Jailed Austin for 1 year.

7 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution ◦C) Santa Anna sent more troops to take a cannon from the Texans. Failed. ◦D) Texans take over the Alamo in 1835.

8 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution V) The Fight For the Alamo ◦A) 1836, Texans held a meeting at Washington-on- the-Brazos to discuss revolt. ◦B) Sam Houston is given command of the Texan Army  1) Two small forces, approximately 600 men in total  2) William Travis and Juan Seguin led these groups

9 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution ◦C)Feb. 23, 1836, Mexican troops surrounded San Antonio and began seize of the Alamo. ◦D) 12 days, the men in the Alamo survived the siege ◦E) Day 13, 1800 Mexican troops stormed the Alamo. Texans ran out of ammunition. All but five Texans were killed. End of the Battle for the Alamo.

10 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution VI) Victory at San Jacinto ◦A) Santa Anna massacred 300 people at Goliad. ◦B) Texas’ army grew ◦C) At San Jacinto, Santa Anna and Houston meet. Houston is the winner. ◦D) Santa Anna is forced to give the Texans their independence.

11 The Texas Revolution The Texas Revolution VII) Lone Star Republic ◦A) Sep. 1836, Texas becomes the Lone Star Republic ◦B) 1836, Texas asks Congress to be annexed to the U.S. ◦C) Northerners feared that Texas would give too much power to slave states. Texas was not annexed for another 10 years.
