From Chabot To Berkeley Baoying Zhang University of California, Berkeley Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Timeline of Me Spring 2007 – Came to US, San Leandro Summer 2007 – Enrolled Chabot College Fall 2007 – Worked in Safeway ’ s Starbucks Spring 2008 – New position as booth clerk Fall 2008 – Tutored chemistry in Learning Center Fall 2010 – Transferred to UC Berkeley Summer 2011 – Joined Prof. David Graves ’ Group Fall 2011 – Co-op in Criterion Catalyst as Lab Technician

Life in Chabot Take every class seriously Think independently Start early – homework and career as well Be a tutor or T.A. Finish as many as lower division classes

Transfer Information www.assist.org A very important website !!! A very important website !!! T.A.G. --- Transfer Admission Guarantee Offer by 7 UC, including Davis and San Diego Offer by 7 UC, including Davis and San Diego www. uctag.universityofcalifornia.edu www. uctag.universityofcalifornia.edu T.A.P. --- Transfer Alliance Project For Berkeley only and have income restriction For Berkeley only and have income restriction www. cep.berkeley.edu/TAP www. cep.berkeley.edu/TAP

Life in Berkeley Don ’ t feel bad on B ’ s Networking -- Join professional clubs or societies Look for research position in school Look for internships Utilize the source in Cal

Laboratory Distillation of Ethanol Goal: To determine the efficiency of the distillation column and optimize a model with max yield.

Distillation Column from Textbook

Distillation Column in the Lab

Refinery in the Real World

Laboratory How to: 1. operate the distillation column with various conditions, including flow rate, pressure and temperature. 2. estimate the efficiency of the column 3. build up a model with maximum product yield. Report: prepare a presentation to professor

Research Experience Goal: To investigate the Antimicrobial Effect of Plasma Activated Water

Research Experience How to: Expose dH2O to low temperature plasma to generate Plasma Activated Water (PAW). What we have done: Confirmed the antimicrobial effect of PAW. Detected stable nitrogen-oxide species in PAW. Where are we: Characterize the antimicrobial effect of PAW. New project: UVA + Plasma

Research Experience

Industrial Experience What: Quality Assurance Lab Technician Where: Criterion Catalyst How: Perform physical and chemical tests on catalyst samples Which: Density, Strength, Pore volume, Surface area, metal analysis

Industrial Experience How: Perform physical and chemical tests on catalyst samples Which: Density, Strength, Pore volume, Surface area, metal analysis And: Communicate with processing engineers to follow up out of spect results.

Questions for you What are your greatest strengths? What are your greatest weaknesses? Why did you choose your major? Why did you decide to attend ____? What are your career plans? Describe your ideal job.
