Presenting Model Results: Synergy & Opportunities Ted Swift, Ph.D. Real-Time Data & Forecasting Project, DWR Municipal Water Quality Investigations Branch CWEMF Workshop 6 February 2007

Main Themes Knowledge is Power: Forecasting increases flexibility as things get tight Knowledge is Power: Forecasting increases flexibility as things get tight Feedback between Models & Observations Feedback between Models & Observations Data that does not kill us makes us stronger Data that does not kill us makes us stronger Model forecasts can help minimize unpleasant surprises Model forecasts can help minimize unpleasant surprises Peer review Peer review

RTDF: Three Components MonitoringForecasting Information Dissemination DSM2 Model Aqueduct Extension Others Visualization Dissemination (User Needs Data QA/QC Storage) Data Collection Station O & M Emerging Concerns Special Studies

RTDF Monitoring Stations RTDF Monitoring Stations Hood Sacramento River H.O.Banks Aqueduct Vernalis San Joaquin River l Three boundary stations so far: l Sacramento River at Hood l San Joaquin River near Vernalis l H.O. Banks Pumping plant l All measure: DOC, TOC, salinity l Vernalis & Banks: Ions Br, Cl, NO3, SO4, F, PO4

Source Tracking

Modeling: Part of a larger network

Innovative uses of information An Early-Warning System for: l Source Water Managers l State and Federal Project Operators l Treatment Plant Operators Sources and Loads information for: l Scientists l CalFed Other Interests: l Forecasting & Power generation

Information Dissemination: Goals & Guides Must meet user needs … which will changeMust meet user needs … which will change Data visualization & presentation are important to reach a variety of usersData visualization & presentation are important to reach a variety of users Feedback fosters improvement & collaborationFeedback fosters improvement & collaboration QA/QC and data management procedures especially important w/ large, real-time data setsQA/QC and data management procedures especially important w/ large, real-time data sets

Forecast Example

Information Dissemination: Products Currently RTDF produces a weekly report & data set for the Delta, SWP and CVP e-mailed to about 240 subscribers & available on MWQI web site.Currently RTDF produces a weekly report & data set for the Delta, SWP and CVP e-mailed to about 240 subscribers & available on MWQI web site. Plans include a continuously updated website where users can access historical, real-time and forecasted data and information.Plans include a continuously updated website where users can access historical, real-time and forecasted data and information. Longer term: Even closer collaboration & feedback between monitoring, forecasting, and dissemination- Real-time forecastingLonger term: Even closer collaboration & feedback between monitoring, forecasting, and dissemination- Real-time forecasting

Applications of Assessing Sources and Loads l Loading Information from Various Land Uses l Determine Sampling Locations to Fill in the Information Gaps l Model Development for Transport to and Load at Intakes. l Monitor and Model Transport of Contaminants from Different Sources l Determine Priority Sources for Watershed Protection Efforts l Apply Information to Regulatory Processes or Control Efforts

RTDF Project Goal To provide data and information to source water and system managers, municipal treatment plant operators, researchers, and stakeholders to optimize and balance resource use, promote science-based decision making, and economic efficiency. To provide data and information to source water and system managers, municipal treatment plant operators, researchers, and stakeholders to optimize and balance resource use, promote science-based decision making, and economic efficiency. MWQI’s Mission Working closely with urban State Water Contractors and other users of Delta water our mission is to assist in the monitoring, protection, and improvement of drinking water quality of Delta water delivered to these various users and to disseminate data to all users in a timely manner.
