1 1 C.E.A.S.E. (Changing Environment and Attitudes for Substance Elimination) A FAITH-BASED TOBACCO CONTROL PROGRAM FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

2 2 MISSION To partner with local churches utilizing faith-based strategies to create an environment which educates the African American community regarding the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse.

3 3 THE PROBLEM Each year, more African Americans die from diseases caused by smoking than, murder, AIDS, drug and alcohol abuse and car crashes combined! Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

4 4 OBJECTIVES 1)Identified and/or developed culturally specific faith-based programs, curriculum and resources that meet the needs of the identified population. 2)Identified and developed a coalition of faith- based leaders. 3)Trained members to conduct cessation and prevention classes in their congregations.

5 5 SERVICES Adult Cessation classes Six one hour sessions Held in local churches Culturally specific, faith-based curriculum Second hand smoke presentations Youth Prevention Classes - Four one hour session -Held in churches, after school and summer programs -Age and culturally appropriate curriculum -Second hand smoke presentations

6 6 Adult Activities Citywide Clergy Luncheon Health Forums Hat Off to Health Senior Events Annual conference Youth Prevention Activities: Friday Night Live Poster/Essay Contest Youth Summit CEASE Preschool Presentations One hour session Held in Head Start programs and child care centers

7 7 PROGRAM OUTCOMES CESSATION 45 adults enrolled in six week sessions 25 adults completed six week sessions 14 adults stopped smoking Participants that Stopped Smoking after Cessation Program (N=14)

8 8 PREVENTION 2778 youth participated in anti-smoking activities 283 youth completed prevention classes

9 9 SECONDHAND SMOKE 400 persons attended “Not in My Temple” presentation. Gender of Youth Participants (N=171) Gender of Adult Participants (N= 229)
