14 How Do We Get Started All Tutor assignments come through the Tutor Center. The Tutor Center lets you know about the assignment. It is the learner’s responsibility to contact the tutor and set up an appointment place and time. Tutoring must take place in a public location

15 What Do You Do When You Get Your First Call? Exchange Phone Numbers  Especially cell phone numbers  The Tutor Center gives the learner your phone number but we do not give you the learner’s phone number. Recommend scheduling first appointment at the Tutor Center Tutor Center can assist with initial introductions if needed. Be clear about exact meeting times and locations Be specific-  ex. Meet at the Reference Desk on the first floor of the library at 7:00 p.m.  Write down the specifics that you agreed upon

16 Do not just say "good bye" when the session is over. You should:  Positively assess the work that was done during the session.  Ask the learner if he/she has any questions  Give assignments or explain expectations of the learner if appropriate.  Schedule your next appointment.  Do any necessary tutor paperwork for your desk. Adapted from Ball State University, Muncie, IN 2005http://vgncds.bsu.edu:82/universitycollege/article/0,,24002--,00.html Ending a Tutor Session

Do turn time sheets in by the last day of the month Do always give the learner your full attention. Do express confidence that the learner can learn the material. Do wear modest clothing. Shirt and shoes required.

Don't be afraid to admit to your learner that you do not know an answer. Don’t comment on the professor or the grades given for assignments, tests, exams, and so on.
