2 WHO ARE THEY? Immigrants between 1880-1920 known as “New” Immigrants Came from Eastern and Southern Europe Greeks, Russians, Hungarians, Italians, Turks, Poles Mostly men (70%) By 1907- 80% of immigrants came from eastern and southern Europe

3 WHY DID THEY COME? Economic Troubles Overcrowding and poverty left many unemployed (Italy and Hungary) Farmers could not own enough land to support their families (Croatia and Serbia) Major crop failures (Sweden) Persecution Jews were persecuted in Russia during the 1880s

After 1892, Ellis Island was used to register immigrants Many immigrants flocked to the cities where they worked in industries Steel Mills (Pittsburgh) Sweatshops People from the same ethnic group tended to form separate communities Neighborhoods in New York, Chicago, San Francisco
