11 INCLUSION  By helping to increase cultural competency, the goal is to also increase campus inclusion  Diversity is not as meaningful without inclusion

12 “An integrated series of awareness and attitudes, knowledge areas, and skills.” (Diller, 2011, p.32) WHAT IS CULTURAL COMPETENCE?

13  In the past, cultural competence may have only been sought out by those wanting to work specifically with minority groups  The times are changing  May no longer be optional WHY BECOME CULTURALLY COMPETENT?

14  Not only for students  Higher education is a time of learning, both in and out of the classroom  The Office of Multicultural Affairs is all inclusive ON A COLLEGE CAMPUS

15  Reactions (body language, tone etc.)  Intentional about approach  Take the time to listen  Repeat and/or rephrase  Do your best to understand  Emotional Intelligence  Respect is crucial! TIPS

16 LIFE LONG JOURNEY  Cultural competence is emotionally demanding and does not occur overnight  Many benefits from cultural competence
