3 Objectives Understand different personal communication systems are available. Know what personal communications connections are available. Be able to select the most appropriate method of personal communication.

4 The connections you need to know Wireless (Wi-Fi) Bluetooth WiMax GIS (Geographical Information System) GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)

5 WiMax WiMax Video Basically wi-fi on a larger scale (metrpolitan area) and much much faster speeds than 3G or HSDPA. Not limited to wi-fi hot-spots WiFi is only limited to around 10-300 feet. WiMax is limited to between 3-10 miles! More efficient than Wi-Fi.

6 Where for art thou WiMax Wider use of Wireless equipment (such as Apple iPod Touch, Smart Phones etc). Faster internet use on the move, anywhere. Able to transfer files, emails etc (via the internet) significantly faster than Bluetooth etc. FULL internet access on the move (streaming etc). Free or subscription based service. Can reach out to rural places. Security issues (a public network – your information is public). Expensive to setup. VERY new technology so not wide-spread yet. Few technologies (phones etc) support it yet.

7 GPRS Global Packet Radio Service ‘Always On’ mobile internet (pre-dates 3G and HSDPA) Common in all mobile phones today in the UK. Without it, today you would not be able to: Send and Receive MMS (Multimedia messaging service) Instant Messaging on your mobile Access the internet on the go via WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Now overtaken by 3G, HSDPA and EDGE.

8 Today’s Task Imagine WiMax has been launched in Yarm. Everyone can now access free WiMax wherever they are. As a technology specialist you need to create an advertisement. The advert must promote WiMax clearly and simply. Explain what WiMax is and the benefits to them. KISS Keep It Short & Simple
