2 2 Objective In this session we will take a closer look at Information literacy and see how we use an online tutorial for IL in user education at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and at St.Olavs Hospital – Trondheim University Hospital

5 5 Online tutorial – but why ? Quality reform program in Norway The challenge –in offering suitable user education for 20.000 students –To reach all students, irrespective of library opening hours The answer –develope a web tutorial on information literacy

6 6 VIKO - Your Guide to Information Literacy Interactive course in information literacy Designed for students at NTNU Provides help in searching for information and writing papers Can be implemented as part of other library and university courses VIKO ver.2 (2007) Subject guides WAI-recommendations

7 7 VIKO aims to Enhance information literacy at NTNU and St.Olav’s Hospital Increase quality of students’ performance Replace basic-level user education Teach students essay writing and source evaluation techniques Support teachers in student tutoring Prevent plagiarism

12 12 Integration with it’s:learning – NTNU’s e-learning platform VIKO is linked from it’s learning’s homepage promoted as help in writing papers and literature searches recommended in it’s learning classes for teachers teachers are offered help to link VIKO from courses using it’s learning test tool

13 13 VIKO Subject guides – learning outcome Be familiar with the bibliographical sources within the subject Be able to identify, analyse and critically evaluate information resources Know where to find information sources Know how to use them

14 14 VIKO Subject guides Pilot project 2007 –3 subject guides (Biology, Scandinavian Studies, Health Education) –Usability test May 2008: –25 VIKO subject guides operative (in norwegian) –Search examples for 30 databases

16 16 Librarians have to be information literate themselves, with a high degree of professional competence; this will make them confident in their abilities to teach, assist and advise others
