Solid Geometry - Objectives Classify three-dimensional figures according to their properties. Use nets and cross sections to analyze three-dimensional figures

Solid Geometry - Vocabulary Face- a flat surface on a three-dimensional shape Edge- a segment that is the intersection of two faces Vertex- point that is the intersection of three or more faces

Classifying 3-D Figures Name the vertices, edges and bases Example: Rectangular pyramid Vertices: A,B, C, D, E Edges: AB, BC, CD, AD, AE, BE, CE, DE Base: Rectangle ABCD A B C D E

Try One! Classify this figure: P Q

Identifying a 3-D figure from a net A net is a diagram of a surface of a 3-D shape that can be folded to form the 3-D figure To indentify look at the number of faces and the shape of each side Example: The net has one square face. The remaining faces are triangles so the net makes a square pyramid.

Try one! Describe this 3-D figure that can be made by the net

Describing cross sections of the 3-D figures A cross section is the intersection area of a 3-D figure and a plane. Example: Describe each cross section below: -------------------------- This cross section is a triangle

Try One! Describe each cross section:
