Outline of a shared online fire information system for S.E. Asia Chris Elvidge NOAA National Geophysical Data Center chris.elvidge@noaa.gov January 21, 2003

Current Situation Multiple data providers. Large numbers of interested parties. Value added products, such as smoke transport predictions, require combination of multiple data sources and may require operation of a model. The level of effort required to generate all the products of interest is cost prohibitive for any one country or agency.

On-Line Fire Information Systems Can provide interactive access to data. Can generate overlay displays of fires with user selected background maps or images. Can provide interactive links to models, such as HYSPLIT. Once a product suite is standardized, daily reports can be automatically generated in html or pdf format. This would be advantageous for the operational users. For example a daily report containing maps and images could be generated for Sumatra. This could be automatically delivered to a subscription list and could also be selected from a daily report list posted at a web site.

Examples of On-Line Fire Information Systems MAFF (S.E. Asia) http://www.affrc.go.jp/ANDES/ (graphical images of hotspots and fire risk)http://www.affrc.go.jp/ANDES/ MSS (Indonesia/Malaysia) http://www.nea.gov.sg/metsin/ (graphical images of haze and hotspots)http://www.nea.gov.sg/metsin/ MMS (Indonesia/Malaysia) http://www.kjc.gov.my/english/service/climate/fdrs1.html (Fire Danger Rating graphical images) http://www.kjc.gov.my/english/service/climate/fdrs1.html NOAA (USA) http://nhis7.wwb.noaa.gov/website/SSDFire/viewer.htm (ArcIMS - interactive display of hotspots from multiple sensors)http://nhis7.wwb.noaa.gov/website/SSDFire/viewer.htm USGS (USA) http://geomac2.cr.usgs.gov/ (ArcIMS – interactive overlay of hotspots and other geospatial data)http://geomac2.cr.usgs.gov/ IBAMA (Brazil) http://www.dpi.inpe.br/proarco/bdqueimadas/ (interactive overlay of hotspots and other geospatial data - INPE TerraLib with MySql)http://www.dpi.inpe.br/proarco/bdqueimadas/

What do we mean by SHARED? Data products drawn from multiple providers. There may be more than one service provider (for different geographical regions, languages, or user commuties). Share scripts, applets, API’s, models.

Question: Does the group want to work on building a shared fire information system for S.E. Asia?
