UNDERSTAND First we looked at our specified rubric so that we could adequately understand what we were required to do. Next, we looked at the given formula so that we could predict the terminal velocity

EXPLORE We then explored different websites to understand more about parachutes. We learned that the drag of the parachutes must slow the parachute down enough so that the terminal velocity is slow enough that the egg won’t break.

DEFINE We used the equation, to calculate terminal velocity. Our parachute had to be under 200 grams. Also, we could only use what we had available, meaning we used plastic garbage bags as our parachute. Finally, the parachute had to be packed into a compartment before deploying, which would allow it to deploy once a certain velocity had been reached.

Ideate We decided to use poster board to construct a container for the parachute. The parachute had to be approximately 1.2 m 2. We made ours a rectangle instead of a circle, like other groups were doing. We used fishing wire to attach the parachute to the container. Finally, we made a smaller parachute to be attached to our larger parachute to pull it from the container. The egg would be held in a net of strings at the bottom of the contraption.

Ideate Some of our original sketches:

Prototype Then, we constructed our magnificent parachute.

Refine Our container was too small for our parachute, meaning was packed too tightly to let air force the parachute out of the container. So we added some space to ours to allow more room for the parachute so it could get out easier. Then, it worked flawlessly.
