1 Academic Literacy 2015 - 2016

2 The Academic Literacy course is designed to extend the reading proficiency of grade 7 students. By the end of this course, students will have achieved two overarching goals: 1. Be critical consumers of texts 2. Write in response to texts

3 Grading Protocol 2015-2016

4 Weighted 30%: Assessments Tests Quizzes Projects

5 Weighted 60%: Daily Performance Tasks Work that is done in the classroom on a daily basis categorized by the following: Comprehension and demonstration of student understanding of concept Writing Assignments Vocabulary Enrichment Notebook check

6 Weighted 10%: Preparation for Class Homework (not to be more than 5%) Class Preparedness (SSR book)

7 Grading Teachers should not drop the lowest grade from the gradebook. No extra credit may be given Absentee late work will follow district guidelines.

8 Late work The earned percentage grade will be reduced by 10% for one day late. The earned percentage grade will be reduced by 20% for two days late. The earned percentage grade will be reduced by 30% for three days late. After the third late day the grade results in a zero.

9 Beginning of Class Expectations Always enter quietly Read the “Do Now” posted on the board Prepare for class (clear your desk of binders, have your writing instrument, SSR book and your class notebook on your desk top)

10 Written Work Expectations capital letters where appropriate complete sentences (unless otherwise stated) include POQ when appropriate include accurate information If the work is a final copy of an essay or project, the spelling should be correct.

15 Unit 5- Test Taking Strategies Multiple choice questions Open ended questions Vocabulary

16 Unit 6 - Point of View and Historical Accuracy Analyze POV through characters Evaluate historical accuracy of fictional text Synthesize multiple texts on one topic Vocabulary

17 Unit 7 – Text Structure Types of text structures How literary devices contribute to structure Figurative language Vocabulary
