1 Lesson 11 Reciprocal & Multiplicative Inverse-Order of Operations –Identifying Multiplication & Addition If one fraction is the inverted form of another fraction, each of the fractions is said to be the RECIPROCAL of the other fraction. For example: 3/2 is the reciprocal of 2/3 -4/11 is the reciprocal of -11/4 1/4 is the reciprocal of 4 -5 is the reciprocal of -1/5 1/0 is MEANINGLESS and therefore ZERO is the ONLY real number which DOES NOT have a RECIPROCAL. If a number is multiplied by its reciprocal the PRODUCT is the number 1.

2 Lesson 11 continued Definition of Reciprocal or Multiplicative Inverse For any nonzero real number a, the RECIPROCAL, or MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE, of the number is 1/a. ORDER OF OPERATIONS Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally. PEMDAS
