Legislation COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 2008/119/EC laying down minimum standards for the protection of calves (codified version) Defines a calf as a ‘bovine animal up to 6 months old’ The Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007 (No. 2078) Regulation 5 Schedule 6: Additional conditions that apply to the keeping of calves for rearing and fattening Requires improved standards to Council Directive for some provisions

3. Elements of the Legislation Article 3a. No calf shall be confined in an individual pen after the age of 8 weeks...... Individual pens must not have solid walls, but perforated walls which allow calves to have direct visual and tactile contact Article 3b.
