1 Projectile Motion Projectile motion results from a momentary force that causes an object to fly through space in a parabolic motion. There is an x component and a y component to each projectile. The acceleration of gravity, 9.80 m/s 2 affects the y component only.

2 Projectile Motion An object shot horizontally will drop to the ground at the same time as an object dropped. (Ignore wind resistance) Solve these problems in 2 parts, the x phase and the y phase.

3 Steps For Solving Projectile Problems Choose an origin for your x/y coordinate system. Draw a labeled diagram of the problem. Analyze the x and y as two related, but separate problems. List the unknown and known values for the x and y parts then find an equation that will work.

5 Projectile Motion Is Parabolic X=V x0 t Y=V y0 t – ½ gt2 If you solve the first equation for t and substitute that into the second equation, once you simplify, you end up with y=ax-bx 2, which is a well known equation for parabolas.
